In a private letter ruling, the IRS indicated that federal solar tax credits (the 30% investment tax credit) could be utilized on battery storage system retrofits of an existing residential solar system. The ruling applies to solar arrays built in a previous tax year, and a battery system qualifies only if it is charged exclusively by the solar array and not the grid. It’s important to note that this ruling is not a blanket guidance, only an indication of how the IRS would likely rule given the same set of criteria. In any case, the ruling is seen as one that could “open the floodgates” for residential solar installers eager to add energy storage to their mass-market offerings.
